SOCIAL EVENTS 2024 – A MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL CONVENER

Saturday 3rd February – Six Nations Rugby followed by a Curry Night

To make best use of the clubhouse, we are having a bit of “double-header”. From late afternoon (16:45), the Wales vs Scotland Six Nations Rugby International will be shown on the big screen. The bar will be open for refreshments and I’ll be getting in half-time pies for anyone who lets me know in advance.

Don’t worry if rugby isn’t to your taste. In the evening the clubhouse will be open for a Curry Night, for anyone who fancies coming down for an evening of food, drink and a good old chinwag. This one’s going to be a “take-away” affair – we’ll gather food choices in the early evening (or possibly beforehand) and place an order with a local curry house for delivery. Even if curry is not your thing, you are very welcome to come along for a drink and a chat. I’ll pop a wee reminder out next week.

Thursday 22nd February – Movie Night

Next up, we have “The Mercy” – a Colin Firth film which tells the remarkable story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Glove Race. His hope was to be the first person in history to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. With an unfinished boat and his business and house on the line, he leaves his wife and children behind, hesitantly embarking on an adventure on his boat “Teignmouth Electron”. Start time for this one will be 7.30pm.

9th March – FCC Spring Muster & Italian Night (preceeded by Italy vs Scotland Six Nations)

Please do mark your diaries for this one, as it’s essentially the curtain raiser for the new sailing season. It’s not a Spring AGM, but more of an opportunity for us all to come together as a club after the winter. It’s an ideal chance to renew old acquaintances, make new acquaintances, discuss plans for the season, either look for or offer up that little bit of help, or simply spend the evening with like-minded people.

For those interested the Italy v Scotland game will be shown in the afternoon (2.15pm KO). The muster will start at 7pm with a bit of chat from the Commodore and other committee members, giving updates on any current issues and plans for the season ahead – whether that be clubhouse, social, racing or cruising. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions or make contributions before we move on to the rest of the evening – an Italian themed supper to hopefully celebrate a good rugby result.

Future events

We may squeeze in a fun quiz night in early April and then after crane-in we’ll have the annual Commodore’s Party at some point in May. We’ll endeavour to get the exact date for this to you asap.

Over and above the occasional post-race BBQ, there’s been some provisional thinking around the idea of a summer Pontoon Party. The basic plan is to have a number of yachts rafted up alongside the club pontoon(s). Weather permitting we will spend the evening onboard, similar to a “cruise in company” or even a flotilla holiday for those who have experienced that. It will be something a little different for us and an opportunity for some easy onboard socialising in the company of friends. We also have a ready made back up if the weather wasn’t too favourable. Details and a date (probably July) to follow.

Throughout the season we will no doubt have a number of visiting cruises from other Forth yacht clubs. I’m hoping we can turn at least some of these into combined social evenings to bolster inter-club relationships.

I’m thinking we will have another clubhouse event in September (format tbc) and then close out the season with the annual FCC Dinner Dance in mid-November. We have a provisional date of Saturday 9th November, however I will confirm this date, and the venue etc., in the next few weeks. Last year this event was very poorly attended in comparison to previous years so it would be great to see as many members as possible this time around. We hope to change things a little to encourage better attendance, but before doing that I’ll be canvassing interest so we can make it the best event as possible.

Hopefully this gives you a reasonable idea of where we are currently. It’s not a definitive list but should cover the main plans for the year ahead. Please get in touch though if you have any ideas or suggestions which you think could be of interest.

As I mentioned at the AGM, I’ll be looking for the usual assistance for crane -in/out, and also helpers for some of the BBQs and other events. Every little helps and clubs only really work well if people contribute at least a little bit along the way.
