On Sunday the 26th of May, Forth Cruising Club hosted the Fife Regatta.
Forth Cruising Club hosted the Fife Regatta on Sunday 26th May 2013. In total thirteen boats took part, six Div.1, one Div.2 and six white-sail class. The sole Div. 2 boat, Naiad, opted to race with the Div. 1 boats.
The Div. 1 race started in light winds at 14:15 with Hobbes and Suspicion getting good starts whilst the rest of the pack all followed closely grouped together. Thirty minutes into the race it became obvious to the organisers that the fleet would not be able to complete the course within the time limit and the ‘course shortened’ flag was raised. First across the finish line was Hobbes closely followed by Suspicion then Erin and Shoki. Unfortunately Kermit, Naiad and Wild Horse were defeated by the light wind and did not finish.
On corrected time the results were;
1st Suspicion 0:54:33
2nd Hobbes 0:57:46
3rd Erin 1:08:31
4th Shoki 1:12:53
Meanwhile, the white-sail class race started at 14:20. Most of the fleet made excellent starts showing good pre start tactics in the light wind available. The boats then sailed West up the river rounding our West mark and then heading for the Boness channel buoy out of sight of the starters hut. This race was originally scheduled for two laps of the course but the drop in wind speed meant that this race would also be shortened.
As the white-sail class disappeared up the river, the second Div. 1 race started at 15:50. With only six boats taking part due to Erin quietly heading back to Port Edgar, the start was very similar to race one. As the race progressed the wind picked up slightly and soon the spinnakers were billowing, pushing the boats along nicely. Unfortunately it was not enough to ensure the race went the complete distance so the ‘race shortened’ flag was raised once more.
It is at this point that we in the starters hut became aware that most of the fleet had not observed the flags flying as one after the other sailed through the finish line, despite the horn being sounded, and on to the next mark! One boat even attempted to disqualify himself for missing a mark, well after he had finished the race, you know who you are!
On corrected time this race was even closer than the first.
1st Suspicion 0:59:03
2nd Hobbes 0:59:30
3rd Shoki 0:59:45
4th Wild Horse 1:01:57
5th Naiad 1:02:05
6th Kermit 1:04:13
Congratulations to Suspicion as the winners of the 2013 Fife Regatta.
At the same time as the Div. 1 boats were finishing the white-sail class was also approaching the end of their race. It was ‘all hands on deck’ in the starters hut as we took note of each boat, and what class she was, passing through the finish line in close succession.
On corrected time the results were;
1st Cerberus 2:04:05
2nd Joint Venture 2:05:03
3rd White Heather 2:10:20
4th Caprice 2:11:52
5th Katie Mor 2:14:34
6th Meggy 2:28:08
Congratulation to John Harris on board Cerberus for a fine win.
I would also like to thank all of the competitors for supporting this event. Two of the competitors though, I would like to single out for special mention.
Firstly, White Heather. As the sole representative of PEYC’s White-sail class you put up a great fight against the ‘local knowledge’ of our own boats. If you could pass the word around your fellow cruisers at Port Edgar of this race we would be grateful.
Secondly to Ian Arnott on Caprice. For someone relatively new to the sport of sailing you put up a darn fine show. We look forward to observing your progress as the racing season unfolds
We at FCC would like to thank all the Div. 1 yacht and the sole Div. 2 yacht for attending, and for their welcomed comments after the race and hope to see them next year.
FCC has held this event for the past two years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We welcome all feedback, good or bad, as this will assist us in making this event bigger and better next year.
I would like to thank Alastair Bullions and George Scrivener for their hard work and diligence without which this event would not have been the success it was. I would also like to thank our Commodore Denis Sullivan. His many years behind the mast provided us with the much needed experience required during the day.
Once again thank you to all who attended.
