Fife Regatta, 20 May 2012 – Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions

On May 20th Forth Cruising Club has the honour of holding this years Fife Regatta. This competition is open to all Division 1, 2 and white sail yachts that hold an FYCA handicap. It will be quite a spectacle to see the big Division 1 yachts going round our course and all members are encouraged to come down and watch. Even better, if you hold an FYCA handicap why not enter and compete against other white sail yachts for the prizes on offer!
Details of this race and how to obtain an entry form and Sailing Instructions can be found on the  ‘Racing‘ page

Thefts at Blackness Boat Club

I have been made aware of serious thefts from boats moored at  Blackness Boat Club.  The boats were on their moorings and broken into between 25th April and 2nd May. The thieves targeted mainly electronic equipment – chart plotters, depth sounders, VHF radios and the likes. BB Club has asked that if anyone gets an offer of second hand boat equipment try and get as many details and information about the person as possible for the police as it may be their stolen gear.
FCC members should be aware of these thefts, not just to be on the look out for stolen property, but also to ensure that their own boats are secure as possible.  Hopefully our security cameras on the pier will help as a deterrent.

A Message from the VC

Ahoy, and firstly a big thank you to all who participated in the Driftwood trophy on Saturday. It was really great to see nine club boats out on the water. Congratulation go to Jim Simpson for coming first in the fin class, (and first across the line on corrected time), and to Ian Girvan who won the bilge class. Full result details will appear soon on our new club website. I hope as many of you will compete in the Masson trophy on Saturday and in future FCC events.  The Masson race instructions have been added to the Racing page.
On a more sombre note, the OOD identified a competitor disposing of litter over the side of their boat once over the finish line. May I remind all that the disposal of any litter, including glass bottles, is strictly against the RYA principles of waste management and conservation. Below is an excerpt from the RYA’s website on waste management that all sailors are obliged to adhere to.

Waste

Whilst on-board it is easy to accumulate a fair amount of garbage and unlike at home where you have your wheelie bin just outside there is very little space to store it.  Sadly, the quantity of litter found in our ocean, seas and along our coasts is rising and this has a serious impact on the environment and wildlife.  Contrary to popular belief, marine litter does not provide a suitable habitat/ artificial reef for marine organisms. It has been reported that some types of litter can persist in the marine environment for periods up to 500 years.
Garbage means all food, domestic and operational wastes produced on board (except sewage). This includes food wastes, paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery and similar refuse from all vessels.
The basic principles are:
  • put no garbage into the sea
  • retain garbage on board and dispose of it ashore
The UK has strict rules on dumping garbage at sea with substantial penalties for offenders (see Briefing note 06/02: Prevention of Pollution from garbage).  Food wastes may only be disposed of at sea if they have been pulverised and you are at least 3 miles off shore (12 miles in the North Sea or English Channel).  There are rules for ports and terminal operators to provide adequate disposal facilities ashore.
